England's Patron Saint.
Today never resonates quite the same as St Patrick's or St Andrew's days. Not least because; "National Days are not celebrated in Britain in the same way as they are in a number of other countries. Only St Patrick's Day in Northern Ireland (and the republic of Ireland) and St Andrew's Day in Scotland (from 2007) are taken as an official holiday. All the other national days are normal working days."
Now I'm very much a Unionist at heart but find my patience with the multi-cultural and EU political correctness wearing thin. Jingoism is now a word linked, in the minds of the common purpose, leftist lexicon, with an ignorant, fascist style of human thinking. The moral high ground that is the left forgets that it sits on the top of its own dung hill. It's a place where many really choose not to want to be.
That choice, of course, is never accepted by those who would deny tribal and national heritages. These are seen as outdated and are blamed for everything from genocide to sexism and blockage of the advancement towards their contradictory Orwellian Utopia.
However modern history has proven beyond any doubt the march towards a Federal, Global, or at least European, idyll has failed dismally. The French have reportedly gone nationalist at the level of one in five voters. If we follow the EU, Merkin driven power behind forcing a Sarkozy victory, the scale of the "rebellion" against common purpose is huge. That Hollande has also campaigned on an anti-EU message shows that the national interests are not so easily trodden under.
I earnestly believe that the desire for socialising and identity remains a primaeval instinct. One ingrained every bit as much as that driving us to eat and drink. That is survival. Now trade and the exchange of social interplay, marriage and all the panoply of existence is fine. It doesn't need war to promote philanthropy and love of one's fellow man.
Sadly power, greed and sheer unpleasant passion to dominate, covet or hurt, exists. Here the might of numbers and the affluent hoarding of wealth and arms is used to further the growth of giant armies and commercial looters. The larger these entities the greater the passion to suppress all opposition to their supremacy. It is seen and indeed practised, as necessary to quell and quash dissent. At least where it might threaten the faceless, Despotic regime, hell bent on One World Government.
In order to realise the "dream" of such power, brought under one supreme elite, nationalism and cultural identity are not welcome. To watch as small, once happy tribes are killed and tortured throughout the Middle East to further the New World Order ambition is dreadful. As is the total crushing of the Tibetan peoples and their shining example of "jingoism" at its best.
So when you are vilified and criticised for your pride in the place of your birth, don't allow all the negative nastiness and propaganda to floor you. For all the despicable deeds of Empire and the furtherance of such ambitions in the past there are many things to be proud of.
We once had a great democratic tradition. We led the World to abolish slavery, we wrought a Union out of strife and Island covetousness. We made our Nation great and proud. That was until the dead hand of socialism joined forces with the corporate use of mass migration to swell consumerism.
Then the ideals behind capitalist democracy were hijacked into a global ambition. The greedy used the socialist handbooks, not to free but to enslave. The policy of driving the lower orders into guilt ridden angst, if their instincts were given free rein, has been to date very successful. The cost of this enterprise seemingly too much, however. It can only go one of two ways. A completion of the Orwellian forecast of a Global Dominance by a few, or the return to tribal tradition, fairness and persuasion through example. Time alone will tell.
